Microsoft Word offers a range of features that make it easy to work with templates and customize them to suit your specific needs. In this blog post, we will guide you through the process of creating a document using a legal template in Microsoft Word, allowing you to get a jump start with the form so you can focus on the substance.

Step 1: Accessing Templates

  1. Launch Microsoft Word and open a new blank document.
  2. Click on the “File” tab in the top left corner of the screen.
  3. Select “New” from the left-hand menu to access the template options.

Step 2: Searching for Legal Templates

  1. In the search bar located at the top of the templates window, enter relevant keywords such as “legal pleading paper” or “legal document template.”
  2. Press Enter or click the magnifying glass icon to initiate the search.
  3. Review the available legal templates that meet your requirements.

Step 3: Selecting and Downloading a Legal Template

  1. Browse through the displayed templates and select the one that best fits your needs.
  2. Click on the template to preview it and verify that it includes the required elements, such as case caption, header, and formatting.
  3. Once you have chosen a template, click the “Create” or “Download” button to initiate the download process.

Step 4: Customizing the Template

  1. After the template is downloaded, it will open as a new document in Microsoft Word.
  2. Review the template to ensure it aligns with your specific case or document requirements.
  3. Customize the template by replacing the placeholder text with your own content. This may include case names, dates, parties’ information, and specific legal arguments.
  4. Modify the formatting, fonts, and spacing as necessary to comply with court rules or personal preferences.
  5. If needed, insert additional sections or headings by copying and pasting existing sections or using the appropriate formatting tools in Microsoft Word.
  6. Double-check your document to ensure accuracy and consistency.

Step 5: Saving and Storing the Document

  1. Click on the “File” tab and select “Save As” to save your customized document.
  2. Choose a relevant file name and select a preferred location on your computer or cloud storage service to save the document.
  3. Consider creating a separate folder to store all your legal documents for easy access and organization.

Remember to review and adjust the templates to meet specific requirements for each case or document, providing accurate information and adhering to applicable court rules. For the next step in increasing your productivity at the keyboard, check out this list of essential Windows and Mac shortcuts.
